My Story

I "graduated" from MHS the same year you did when I moved to Ely as the athletic director. That lasted four years as I left education, went into the insurance business and moved the family to Grand Rapids after our house burned to the ground on January 30,1978. Sue worked as a Nursing Instructor at our local community college, retiring as the director of the program in 2002. We raised our three boys there, we were fortunate that they were all gifted students and athletes. All three All-conference football players, as well as hockey players. They all played Division I hockey, Kurt at the Air Force Academy, Jon at UMD, and Todd at Miami of Ohio. Jon and Todd played professionally for a few years before coming back to the home area.
I am enjoying retirement, Sue & I spent winters in Texas and did a lot of travelling before she died. Now, I am just enjoying grandkids and families.
I am now living in The Pillars of Grand Rapids, a retirement community, which I understand is similar to one in Mankato.
Not sure if any of you are High School Hockey fans, but wondering if any of you might have noticed that there was a Rohloff from Grand Rapids in the State Tourney. Luka is my Grandson and will be a Sr. this year. Has attracted a lot of attention from various scouts for playing at a high level.

It's always good to hear from you.

School Story

I started my teaching career at MHS in 1965, my first year out of Gustavus; My first assignment was teaching Biology first the first four years before moving full time into the Physical Education Department. I was head swimming coach for 7 years and assistant football coach during my entire 8 years at MHS. Being named Head Swimming coach was interesting, as I was the coach at the first swimming meet I ever saw. Long story. Football was very rewarding as we had we had a couple of good years before I left, winning a share of the Big Nine Championship your Sr. year. Great memories of of some very talented, coachable young men.
BTW: That little Crown Bearer at Homecoming, Kurt, is a retired Air Force Lt. Col. flying a Boeing 787 all over the world for American Airlines!

I remember Sam as having a quietly strong presence. Always willing to learn and perform as needed.
